Scandi-Boho chic hanging chair
Winters in Scandinavia come early and last long. They’re dark, cold, and wet. The kind of weather that makes you just want to curl up under a blanket with a warm drink, a warmer blanket and a hot fire. You just want to feel cozy and calm. You want to feel “hygge.”
HYGGE is a danish noun, pronounced hyg·ge. Hygge, simply put, means cozy. But like so many things, its greater meaning get’s lost in translation. It is a a defining characteristic of Danish culture. Hygge is a lifestyle approach, a quality of coziness and friendliness. It fosters a feeling of contentment or well-being. Lighting a candle with purpose of slowing down and enjoying this moment? You’re experiencing hygge!
Back to those Scandinavian cold, dark, wet winters. When I was younger, it would be dark when I came home from school at 4pm. I looked forward to curling up onto my bed and reading a magazine my mom had picked up at the local store. It was cozy and inviting experience; it was hygge.
It is such a fond memory, and I wanted to create that same experience for my daughter. She’s a little book worm like her father. They have their nose in a book as often as they can, so I wanted to make a hygge spot especially for her. I choose a chic hanging swing chair, placed it near the window for lots of natural light and daydream gazing out the window between chapters. Then I filled it with pillows and stuffed animals. She can get all snuggled in with gentle swaying to compliment her story of sailing the high seas, or bouncing up and down as she spacewalks on a distant planet!
And there is room for 2! Is there anything better then reading to your kid in a comfy chair? It’s only better if the chair is boho chic and hanging from the ceiling! Get your tools out and find a good secure spot to hang this chic chair.
Why not follow the Danish example and bring more hygge into your daily life? Slow down, get a fuzzy blanket, light a candle. Drink a hot cup of cocoa together as a family. I’m feeling hygge just typing this.
